The ' preliminary' tests now to be described were made by a method which did not prove satsifactory. Description of "Preliminary" Tests. The specimens used for this: test were those two A, B and C pieces, from each tile, which had the largest and smallest per cents, respectively, of absorption at the end of the 24 hour immersion period. These pieces were given the hot water treatment described on pages 37 and 38, and then were marked and packed in a wire basket which fitted loosely inside the copper can in the freezing box. Each piece was marked by fastening to it, with small copper wire, a copper tag stamped with the number of the tile and the letter designating the piece. The specimens were given two freezings and thawings per day during which they were subjected to temperatures of from 3F to 7F for at least five hours at each freezing period. At the end of the freezing period the basket of specimens was raised from the freezing box and lowered into the thawing tank for a one-hour thawing period. Following the thawing period the specimens were cooled and then returned to the freezing box. The temperature of the water in the thawing tank ranged from 140F to 200F, before the specimens were lowered into it. It was usually necessary to lessen the heat under the tank in order to prevnt the water from boiling before the end of the thawing period. The plan was to thaw the specimens in very hot water, but not in boiling water. FIG. 13. PLANS OF FREEZING BOX.
